10 Natural Cough Home Remedies For Kids
There are various cough home remedies for kids and you need to try the remedy that will work best with the type of cough your kid is suffering from. The cough home remedies in this post will help soothe your kid’s throat and help him sleep better and most importantly all the remedies are natural cough home remedies.
One of the easiest and most common remedies to provide relief is to let your kid gargle some warm water with one teaspoon of salt, 3 times a day.
Honey is a very popular cough remedy for kids. This is because honey has anti-microbial properties that can help fight off colds. Give your child a warm cup of tea with one tablespoon of honey and squeeze some lemon juice in it. Giving honey to kids below 1 year of age can cause botulism. Why it should be avoided.
If your kid is suffering from a wet cough with a blocked nose and lots of mucus on the breathing passage, then steam inhalation can be a good option. Warm air can help loosen up the mucus from the air passage and provide relief to your kid.

The best option to inhale steam is to fill up your bathtub with hot water and add 3-4 drops of eucalyptus oil or peppermint oil to the water. When you have created a sort of steam room, go into the bathroom and let your kid inhale the steam through the nose. Show him how to inhale deep so he can copy you. Do this for max 1 minute.
Don’t stay in the steam room for a long time as this can cause the skin of your kid to dry out, causing a rash. If your kid has sensitive skin or is less than 2 years of age, stay max 30 seconds in the toilet with the steam.
I once stayed 2 minutes inside the bathroom and the next day I notice the skin on my son’s forehead was red and peeling off and he was scratching himself all the time. I put some calendula oil on his forehead and the next day the skin on his forehead was ok.
My son has sensitive skin so I learned not to stay in the “the steam room” for more than 30 seconds. If you have a baby try to stay less time there.
For Older Kids →
Heat up water and put the water in a bowl and add some drops of eucalyptus oil in the water and mix well. If the steam is very hot, keep your child a bit away from it and let him inhale it from a distance (so he does not get burned).
Note that Menthol in peppermint oil acts as a decongestant by helping break down the mucus.
Ginger is one popular home remedy for coughs and this is because ginger has anti-viral properties. Try to make some ginger tea and don’t worry about the strong taste. If you add 1 tablespoon of honey to the tea, it will taste better and your kid should feel better.

When it’s cold we put on the heaters and that causes the humidity in the air to dry out. A bad combination is to have someone in your family suffering from a cough and to have dry air at home. Try air is bad if you are suffering from cough because the dry air can leave the mucus and phlegm dry in the air passage. This will cause irritation and lead to a dry cough. A humidifier will not treat a cough its self, but it will help to alleviate it.
Using a humidifier at night is a great option to let your kid sleep better. Put on the humidifier 30 mins before your kid goes into his room to sleep and let it on 1 or 2 hrs after he has fallen asleep, then turn it off. Put it back on 30 mins before your kid wakes up. You do this to not create too much humidity in the room as that can cause mold.
8. Chicken Soup
Chicken soup will help your kid feel better and is easy to make. I always make a light chicken soup with chicken, carrots and some potatoes and garlic. Garlic is the key ingredients in my chicken soup. I usually peal 2- 3 garlic cloves and chop them as finely as possible and add it to the soup at the beginning (before the soup is boiling). Garlic has antibacterial and antiviral properties that will help you and your kids feel better.
